So my ex yesterday asked if I would let my middle son go to Michigan with his grandparents for a month. An entire month away from my baby...I'm not sure I can handle it. I know they would take care of him but I've never been away from him for that long...well except when I was deployed...but he's never been with this set of grandparents for that long. I'm nervous about saying yes, what do you guys think??

Help me out here...

How old is he again?
Why just the middle one?
How well does he know these people an/or the people he'll be around?

I know you said not very well but what does that mean....has he ever spent time alone with them before?
A month seems like a long time for not very well...

other than the cost factor, could they take turns - 10 days each boy? that is still a month for them but now all the boys get to feel special and pampered but none are away from you for too long????

If you think you can, or you think you cant - you are right.

Lucas is 5. He's never spent any time with them alone. The last time he saw them was last August. I love my ex in-laws they just aren't grandparents the way my parents are. The reason only one is b/c they aren't trained to take care of Wyatt-he's an insulin dependent type 1 diabetic so I'm very cautious about who takes care of him. Cole is only 3 and would never go with them, he barely goes with his Dad b/c he's so attached to me. Lucas would love to spend time with them, but it's so long and he'll be so far away.

ok well that makes perfect sense. howzabout you say 1 week since it is the first time, then see how it goes and maybe 2 weeks next year??? to me that is more than fair. it is not only you who would miss him for a month, it is his brothers as well. have you asked him how he feels about visiting? a week might be a lot of fun. a month is insane IMO

I agree a month is too long at his age...even with grandparents he knows. Parker is very close to his grandmother and all the other "grammies" and "grandpas" at her senior home. They all love him and spoil him and he has a ball but 4-5 days is the max he can handle. Your son may be different though---Are you close enough that you can go get him if he is ready to come home?

Ummmm where in Michigan? Want me to check in on him, make sure he's getting what he needs? I could check in every other day if he's close Smiler

I think you need to maybe talk to your son and see how he feels about the grandparents. Dont ask him if he would like to go but just ask him what he thinks about these people. A month is an awful long time. How about a weekend or a week? A timeframe like that seems more plausable.

Also, thank you for the service you provide to this country. Smiler

I let him go after being guilted into it by his father and him. I went over to tell him goodbye before he left and he was "see ya later mom". I'm already missing him like crazy and the other two are still with their Dad until tomorrow so I'm sitting at home alone watching marathon sessions of John&Kate plus 8. Frowner
