Good info to have. I'm thinking by next summer at age 15 my daughter should be ready for some manual labor Well, nothing too manual but yep.....I'll put her to work, too much drama stuff going on this last summer to really do it.

Working at a young age can be a catch 22 it keeps the kids out of trouble and doing something productive

but at teh same time they are going ot be working the rest of there lives give them time to play

True,it is a catch 22...agreed.

However, at that age I find they want to earn a little bit of their own money as they start preparing to learn about savings and investing and also play money to go out with friends etc...
Mine is 13 going on 14 next month and he would like to start part time work. Of course I will limit his hours because school is important, but just enough to satisfy his financial "wants". It also prepares them for career planning as they see in high school more and more of what they want to do, and what they don't want to do with their lives.

My kids started working at 14. Various states have different requirements.

My daughter started at a movie theater was soon, the shift manager at 15. But, because of her age, her duties had to be limited. Let me tell you that was an Awesome couple of summers though! LOL lots of free movies.

Now at 17 & 20 respectively they are both baristas for Starbucks with my eldest bucking for a manager position. The only thing holding her back, Availability...she wants the Weekends off. Plus she's starting Culinary School in January so, her job is not a primary as it once was.

My son...he's just biding his time...waiting to turn 18, so her can work in a music store. Then? who knows.

My son of 16 started a job last month in the supermarket, stacking shelves.

He comes home with funny stories about irate customers, diplomatic managers and slacking colleagues (one just replies to every request "we don't have it"!!

They have asked him to train on the check out. So he starts later this week.
Naturally, I am not allowed in there when he's working...........
I can just picture it:
"Do you want vouchers?" (standard question).
"No, but have you done your homework?"!!!!

I actually started working at the age of 13. I was a COOK at a local pizza shop (this was before child labor laws were in place so i'm probably dating myself. LOL) I really enjoyed it. Sure, I missed out on some things, but the boss was very flexible if I couldn't work on a certain day for a big event. I really enjoyed it and it taught me some good values that a child needs to learn.

I use to deliever news papers for a local news paper company every morning before school. Had to collect payments every other weekend too. Did it for many years before I got a new job at 16 at McDonalds

Depends, some children learn to not work as hard because they worked so hard growing up. How many bosses really work ... I had a supervisor job where I was responsible for a lot of things including a large crew and an aircraft that was worth millions of dollars. I had a well trained crew and any new hires were trained heavily right away. My only real job ended up being protected them up a corrupt upper management. They did everything including some of my responsibilities making me really obsolete. The other crews on the ramp were not like mine, they needed direction, I felt that they were adults and if they could manage themselves.

I basically did some paperwork, popped their hours in a comptuer each night, and went home. So I know that if a supervisor is good enough that he doesn't do any work. Everyone on my crew could have been a supervisor if they wanted too, unlike me they were much too smart.

I started working at 14. At that point Mom and Dad paid for everything I NEEDED and I paid for everything I wanted. My wants were a bit more restricted because it taught me the value of money and how to save. I have worked since that time with the exception of two times in my life: 2 Semester of Senior year (mom wanted me to enjoy every function and event) & 3 months during my pregnancy.

Evie began working at 14 too but she works for me. I was spending so much time at work and needed reliable help, so I took her with me. Now she is paying for her expensive wants! Most recent: a laptop. She almost has enough!

If only my son can keep a steady job for a while til he starts school...

i started quite early at 9 years i was working..that has did me lots of good because i can sustain my love for shoes and other stuff

working at 9 years?!!

isn't that illegal?? that's called child labour where I come from.............
