"Life is kind of like...stone soup." Board Blazen Parent |
Wow. I watched this movie last night (while waiting for my pdf files to download for my final-dang dial-up) and it was really one of those movies you can't let go of after you watch it. The question it raises, is would it be better for a child to remain with their natural mother, even if she was neglectful, or would it be better if she were taken away to live with someone else who would be completely devoted to raising her. The movie also confronts the idea of people taking matters into their own hands and deals with child molestors and morality and ethics in dealing with criminals who you can't convict. The thing I really liked about it was that it didn't seem to convey one side or agenda. It really seemed fair in presenting the dilemma as a whole. Though the protagonist is clearly in favor of one side through the majority of the film, you are not completely convinced (nor does he seem to be) that he made the right decision in the end. Great film, but kind of depressing. I almost stopped it a couple of times, but it had a good ending.

Like a mother who kidnips her own kids from the father? Name a court who would convict her for that? None here in ILL thats for sure. Was this a TV Movie? "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Deuteronomy 31:6 |

Hi there Dawg.
No, it wasn't a TV movie, it's a new release. I guess it was directed by Ben Affleck and it stars his brother Casey, who really is a good actor (never saw him before this). I rented it because I was curious. I don't want to give anything really away in case you want to see it, but what I mean when I say "ethics in dealing with criminals you can't convict," is that it talks about things like: A child predator who is likely to reoffend and a cop who knows that he's done stuff and hasn't been convicted again, so he plants evidence. A father who abuses his family horribly, beats the child, so he plants evidence of drugs because he knows the guy does the stuff but can never convict him. A mother who is neglectful of her daughter, leaves her in horrid condition, forgets to feed, bathe, and care for her because she's drunk all the time and doing drugs, so would she be better off being taken from her mother and given to someone who will take care of her, or should she remain with her mom? What if her mom regretted everything she's done and pleaded that if God would only return her child she would never touch drugs again. Should she be given another chance? Do people deserve redemption? Is it really so bad for others to be a vigilante when it comes to justice that the justice system sometimes won't serve? I mean it's all very understandable, on all sides, and it's so hard to know sometimes what is right-what is really the right thing. It's really something that you think you can answer easily, but ethics conflict with what you wish could be so. Does that make sense? You'll have to watch it. |
