At A loss for Words - NOT!
Posted
I think I mentioned to some of you before that I'm taking photography classes. Now I need to submit a portrait using only natural light (just the sunlight and no other light) in order for me to graduate and get my certificate. I thought of submitting one of Ian's photos that I took. I have three that I'm trying to choose from... and I can't choose! Help me choose will you? (HB I know you're there somewhere... I need your input here!!)

Anyway guys... let me know which of these photos look most appealing to you... thanks so much in advance for the comments Smiler

portrait #1: in the garden

portrait #2: at the park

portait #3: on his bed near the window

Question:
Which of Ian's photos above do you like most?

Choices:
portrait #1
portrait #2
portait #3

i gasped at #1
ian's face is happy, you can see the moisture on his fingers - it is an extremely engaging photo, you are transported when you see it.
i also really liked how ian was so sharp and the backgroung was so colorful yet blurry.

the others are lovely too, really, seeing your smile in #2 is adorable. but #1 is breathtaking! way to go - wanna come to nj and take some pics of faith?

If you think you can, or you think you cant - you are right.

hey normajean, you dont need to know photography to know what looks good. thanks for the comment... i also liked that pic.. ian was running after my camera that's why he has that amazed look on his face Smiler

thanks laurie... the girl in the background is not me... that's ian's nanny. I asked her to hold Ian while I took his pic (I'm the one behind the camera). Sure I'd take pics of faith if I had enough money to go there LOL. I love taking pics of babies -- because they still do not know how to pose, and each smile that you capture is indeed a precious moment Smiler

I said number 3 only because he's the only one in the shot. They're all cute.

I picked #2 because of many reasons, but mostly because there is a good contrast in color and there is no "washout" from the light. Pictures 1 and 3 seem, to me at least, to lose some of the picture because the light is so intense in places that the picture becomes washed out with the whiteness of the light. I like #1 very much, I just wish that there was more of a "notable" background to it. While I realize you were going for the focus on Ian and the background to be out of focus, I feel you captured that more in picture 2 than any of the others. I also really like in picture #1 how life like and "popping off the page" Ian looks, but none the less, my opinion rests with #2....

OK..THIS IS TOUGH!! Wow...great pics of my Godson! Razzer

But if I have to be selective regarding the use of natural lighting / demonstrative of natural lighting..hmmm...

#1. Great picture, focus, subject framing etc...lighting is nice...but doesnt necessarily give the best demonstration of natural lighting.

#2. This is the best subject framing, mood capture, subject color saturation..etc etc.. however the focus is slightly off...and you would have to lighten the picture overall..just slightly.

#3. This is NOT the best framing, subject capture, or focus... and although the picture is very cute...the focus of Ians face is definitely out of balance with the rest of the picture. HOWEVER, it IS the BEST example of the use of natural lighting...with the shades and shadows of his clothes, daiper and bedding...You can see the individual quilted squares, you can the light washing over the scene from right to left...it's a great shot.

JMHO. Smiler

#1 stands out for me as well. But I will say that I, as well, know nothing about photography. So if it is all about the lighting, then I'm at a loss.
