"On the Board" On the Board |
I'm a 21 yrs old and have a 7 week old son. I was laid off and am currently collecting unemployment, however, it doesn't pay enough to cover the cost of living. I have been looking for a job but haven't had any luck yet. I would very much like to go back to school to become a cosmetologist but I can't afford it. I have no one to stay with my son even if I do go back to work and since all I am trained for are entry level positions everything I have interviewed for wont pay enough to cover daycare & the bills. If anyone has any advise or knows about any type of financial aid I would really appreciate hearing about it.

"Parent on Board" Parent on Board |
Hi Blakesmommy,
I found a website that lists links for educational funding. Whether you're a single mom headed back to school to update your skills or the parent of a graduating teen hoping to go to college this fall, how to pay for schooling can raise your blood pressure faster than hot water on a thermometer. There are thousands of dollars every year that go unclaimed and unused because people never knew the money was even available or how to apply for it. In hopes of alleviating some of that pressure, we've listed some resources below. You may be eligible for several scholarships and grants, and there are rarely restrictions as to how many grants or scholarships you can use simultaneously to pay for education costs, but be sure to thoroughly read the guidelines for each. And remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained. If in your search, you discover additional resources, please feel free to share them with us and we will check them out and add them to our site! I hope this works for ya. Here in Indiana we have a place that helps single moms get an education. That's something I will look into myself once my divorce is final. Maybe there could be a place in California that helps out single moms like that? Good luck! |

Learning to Surf The Board |
I do not know what type of assistance your state provides, but here in Oklahoma (I am assumming all states are like this) we are offered DayCare Assistance. I have 3 children, and I only pay $75 a month for all three. This is available to working parents and parents who are going to school. Furthermore, for parents who are in school, the state offers them a 'small paycheck' to help with funds. I had a great friend who I went to school with who recieved this type of assistance, had her housing paid for, her schooling was paid for (through the school) and she was able to focus on her school and her new baby. Furthermore, my best friend and her husband just graduated from OU last semester. He is now an engineer and she can start working as a school counselor. They had basically the same type of assistance through school. Had they not had the assistance while attending school, then they would not be making the money they are now making.
Anyway, good luck! |
