Getting My Feet (Board) Wet
Posted
Im 18 years old and my baby boy is due Feb. 25. I just found an apartment the other day but the rent is $600 a month. I work full time but i dont make enough to do everything. I tried to apply for section 8 but no one is takin applications and the waiting lists are full. So I'm wondering since I have to pay full rent is there anyother things that I can apply for? Has anyone here had to apply for any government assistance and how did you go about doing it? Any help would be appreciated!

I can't tell you much, just go to every government office you can, and see what they can tell you. Tax cuts has caused major modifications of the welfare system. Welfare is now meant to be a minor supplement to people who are hitting a temporary "rough spot" in their lives.

You can never count on anything that the government offers to you. (Just like child support) You may get medical assistence one month, and have it terminated the next month.

There is low-income housing that's available through section 8. In MN we have neighborhoods that are all duplexes, and meant for struggling parents.

Have you considered shacking up with another single mom and split the bills? I'm sure you aren't the only one out there going throught this in your area.

Go to the DCF office. They will help you by giving you the forms to fill out or pointing you in the right direction. It can be scary to have to go to those places, but sometimes you have to do it. Good luck!

I've heard of emergency housing here where I live. If you meet the requirements they will move you up on the list. I'm not sure what the requirements are but you're almost ready to have your baby and haven't found a place to live so maybe you should check if they have that available in your area. Good luck!
