Looking to start an informal single moms group in the Gainesville, Florida area. Would like to get a group together for education, resources, friendship and camaraderie, as well as fun activities for single moms.
Activities may include: holiday activities, dinners/lunches at local restaurants, potluck suppers, fun and educational outings, picnics, hikes, bowling, etc.
This would be a group that would aim to improve the quality of life for single moms by providing resources to strengthen the emotional, spiritual and financial state of our one-parent family.
We can discuss and share ways to alleviate stress, tips on how to eliminate the all-too-frequent feelings of loneliness and isolation, and share our experiences, in general, as single moms.
Our experience as single mothers (whether by divorce, separation, death, choice or other) is different than other types of families---it would be nice to be able to meet with others sharing similar experiences!
Several moms have already expressed interest...and we are looking for more!
Would like to meet once a week at local Gainesville restaurants, tuesday or thursday (?) early evening for dinner perhaps?
If you are interested, or know someone who would be, please contact me ASAP :
Would like to get the group going for this summer.

Thank you for putting my post in the appropriate spot.

Are you aware of local single moms that would be interested?

I actually, "techinically" am not a mother yet-- I am preganant (with my first child) and my due date was yesterday! But, she has not arrived yet! I am so anxious!

Along with learning about pregnancy, child birth and development... I am trying to learn and gather as much information as possible about being a single parent!

I have meet several other single moms. They have young ones that would be interested in starting a Moms group here, too. I was suprised that there was not already a single parents group started here... I think I have read that single parents make up 50-60% of households!

So, I plan to have the baby (any day now!) and then get a group together. I thought to try to start meeting on Thursdays at the Top restaurant (on Main Street) around 6 or 7pm. I was thinking that The Top is comfortable, pretty inexpensive and kid friendly.

It is at Saint Patrick School.

They also have a group called 'Rainbow' which is a kids group to have discussions with other kids there own age and going through the same thing.

You can Call the United Way and they will have the phone no#'s

Hope that helps.

Oh!
The Sante Fe Comminity College also has a single parent program and also have listings.

I have heard through them, though many years ago no, that they knew of a Single Parents of PreSchooler group.

Hope that helps

Robin

Hi. I live in Gainesville and I am having a hard time. I have lived here for two years...I work at UF...although I do not attend school. I have not met any friends since I have moved here except the father of my 16 month old daughter who I am currently fighting in court. I feel pathetic...but I truly have no friends. Friends I did have decided that I was no longer friend material because I now have a child(taught me a lot about them). I thought you would be able to help me out. Please write me back and let me know. Thank you.

Hello Hello Hello,

I am brand new here in Gator Country!

I have two gorgeous children Tyler who will be 7 in August and Maggie, my princess who is 5 going on 16!

I was raised in Jacksonville and in March moved here.
I suffer from clinical depression, right before the move I was sure I could stop my medications.. HAHAHA. I feel as though I have fallen into the darkness hole ever. I am at my wit's end. My son will be a 2nd grader at Kimball Wiles, my daughter begins her first year this fall. I hope to attend college. I know nothing about this city and feel so lost and home sick. We had the car tpday though and rescued three feral kittens. I really like Gainesville, but I feel like a little lost girl here. I want my children to have playmates. I have even considered posting signs.. ""ATTENTION 5 & 6 YR OLD SEEK PLAYMATES!!"".. I kid you not,,

I know they wany friends to play with. I have even considered posting an ad for childcare just so they can have friends.. anyone on this board in the tower/archer area???

I am a single woman here in Gainesville as well and have recently adopted a 2-year-old boy. He is a sweetie, but prone to a temper tantrum now and again. Although I absolutely love him, I didn't realize how hard being a single parent would be!! I'd be very interested in any group that might develop!!

I'm not quite a mom yet (EDD 2/11/05) but I'd love to get together and meet with other parents that are doing this "On their own," so to speak. I have family here, and they're a blessing, but that doesn't take away the feeling of lonliness that seems to be prevailant. I really hope this takes off.
