Hi everybody. My name is Melissa. I just joined this site. I am a single mom with 2 kids. My son Blake is 3, and my daughter Kalie will be 2 in feb. My son was diagnosed with autism last year. I don't know if there is anyone else out there with a child diagnosed in the spectrum.....if so, I would love to chat and swap advice, and stories with you. Being on my own, I feel like my life is spiraling out of control at times.

Opps.. My son is autistic. Dx first with sensory integration problems then they finally figured out that his problems were far more extensive. He is now 7 years old.

Hi, I'm sorry you are going through this alone. It must be very scary. I would say getting in some kind of education/support group with other parents who are dealing with this. Try to get any outside supports to come in and help you either with child care, cleaning, cooking...anything at all. Sometimes other mothers will exchange babysitting, etc. (I'm sure you already know this) Most of all try to take care of you. Anything to recharge. Please let us know how you are doing.

Also, if you haven't already tried The National Autistic Society Website, it looks like they have a lot of information. Again, please let us know how it's going

Is he in an EI program, if so there should be some sort of parent consult there that can help you with geting with other parents going through the same things with dx's, behaviors, options, etc. Not only for emotional support but parents who have been there/done that can be great knowledge banks... especially when he =hits school age the more "stories" you learn about the more understanding and the more prepared you will be to get exactly what he needs out of the system.

If I can help you ni any way I was a sped teacher prior to having children and also a developmental educator at an EI (birth-3yrs) program. I don't remember it all but I could at the very least help point you in the right direction(s).

(Not the same as a fellow parent, that I know, but figured I'd offer whatever I can)

My son and I are both on the autism spectrum (so's my dad, although he'd never get tested). It's a big spectrum, however. Which specific diagnosis does your son have?

Later,
Bobby
