I have started dating a really nice guy, but you can tell that he has not been to the dentists in a long time. How do you approach the subject that he needs to go to the dentist?

I would probably talk about how I need to go, or have been, or am planning to go. I would then try to work into asking him... I might say, which is true ... Boy, I hate going to the dentist, but it's been over a year... how long has it been since you went?

You could ask him, " I need a new dentist, where do you go?"

That might be lame, I'll be interested to see what other people come up with - and some more *creative* approaches.

Cool

Hi Allison,

If you have only recently started to date him I would give it a while before you approach that subject.

He is likely already aware that he has a problem and may be really self-concious about it without you knowing. Maybe he doesn't have a good dental plan and cannot afford to pay out of pocket for the visits or treatments.

Give it a while so he knows that you truly care for him and the long term health of the relationship so he won't feel so challenged when you address it.

As for HOW to bring it up... I say honesty is the best policy. When you feel the time is right to address it, do it as gently as you can but be truthful. You can tell him that you are a little concerned about the condition of his teeth and that it would be a plus to the relationship if he visited a dentist.

If that is too awkward... maybe on a day when you are just relaxing together, watching TV and talking with each other you can work in something like... "so tell me some things you like or dislike about me" and when it is your turn (after a few nice comments about things you like let him push you for a dislike answer) you can say... well, I am a little embarrassed to address this with you BUT.....

Good luck. My dad's teeth are bad and his mouth smells terrible (he doesn't have any health coverage). He does know it and tries to use mouthwash. I don't even need to say anything... my 3 year old daughter does it for me. He will bend down to give her a kiss and she tells him straight up his breath stinks!!!!

Works for me!

I agree with the others amoung what they have said but dont let it get to where it bothers you to much to where there is no way you can be nice about it when you bring it up.
