I am a 40 yr old single woman just getting started on my research to adopt a child. I have talked to a couple of agencies, started reading, but I know my best resource would be other people that have adpopted... I am leaning (but haven't ruled anything out) towards adopting an infant. I have been told since I am single that an international adotion would be the way to go. There is SO MUCH information out there I would like to narrow down my search. Any help (such as support groups, internet sites, etc.)from adoptive parents would be wonderful!!

Hi Uppity,
I am not an adoptive parent but I do have several clients that have adopted. Have you considered biracial children? I have 5 families that have adopted biracial children locally. There are so many that need homes. I am a biological parent of an 11 year old biracial daughter. I have many clients of adopted biracial children because most of them are adopted by caucasian families. I am a hairdresser and they need help with their hair because all of these kids I have are caucasian and African American. It is a shame but the process is fairly easy and very short, from what I have been told. There are many questions as to how the child will be raised as far as ethnic back ground from what I understand. The best answer is ... as a child that is loved. My daughter gets exposed to many different people from all walks of life as I choose for her to be. She asked me * 4 why her daddy and I were different colors? My reply .. "Because God makes people of all different colors and loves them all the same." She replied to me ... "OH, OK" and has never asked me again.

World Association for Children and Parents (WACAP) has created the brochure, Can Singles Adopt?

They invite any single person who has considered adoption to contact WACAP.

WACAP is one of the most respected and experienced nonprofit adoption agencies. WACAP has placed more than 8,000 children with loving parents across the country.

Single women can adopt from China, India, Russia and the USA. Single men can adopt from the USA.

So that single parents wont feel alone during their adoption, WACAP offers special support throughout the process. Each of their adoption programs that accept single parents has a designated Single Parent Specialist. WACAP also offers special consultations with social workers, support groups and helpful staff.
