On Friday evening I took my son to see the Lancaster bomber at a park in our city -- Windsor, Ontario Canada. The plane has been a landmark of our city for years and has been on a pedestal at Queen Elizabeth Gardens (formerly Jackson Park) for years for all to see. They have removed it from the pedastal by crane and have it on the ground for all to go through until June 10th when they are transporting it to be restored and they want to build a museum for it. We will all miss it at the park but it will still be in our city. We loved the tour -- they had stairs going up into the cockpit and we entered via there and went through the whole plane! My 6 yr old son was thrilled! Especially when they showed him where the guys used to sit in the back and shoot at the enemies! Right up a 6 yr old boy's alley so to speak! If anyone wants to see what I'm talking about go to www.ch2a.ca. This site will also show you our beautiful city located right across the Detroit River from Detroit, Michigan USA . My son and I often go to the beautiful parks here along the river and also love Ojibway Park -- you can click on that under Parks and will see a lot. Also click on Lancaster on the main page of this site and it will show you the plane we went through -- the picture has it on the pedastal still however. Hope you all enjoy this little site journey!

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I used to live in London Ontario and have visited Windsor once before but I can't recall ever seeing this monument.

Here in Portland there is a B17 bomber that use to be a gas station, now a resturant parking lot, people have wanted to get rid of it but like you said it's a land mark. Unfortunately everything forward of the wings has been removed, for restoration I hope. When I was in A&P school I worked on the tail cone as a truck had hit it.
Old war birds are neat and most boys love to see airplanes up close so small airports and airshows make their day. On the Oregon coast there is an air museum in a blimp hanger and the building and doors will make you go wow, not to mention the old planes inside. |
