I'd like to announce to SFV friends...

*inserts drum roll here*

My "little baby" starts Kindergarten today!!

She'll be at a school I've worked at for the past 8 years...

I know every staff member that she could possibly come into contact with...

I adore (and have had consumed alcoholic beverages with) her Kindergarten teacher...

...and yet, I STILL feel nervous!

Wow, I have complete new appreciation for what the parents of my students go through! To you who have ever had kids in school, I'd like to say thanks for putting your trust in your teachers and school systems. I see now what a great "leap of faith" it is on your part!

Yep! Welcome to the "stressed out about your kid in someone else's hands" club. Smiler

I actually had to go through that as recently as 2 years ago..when I put my "homeschooled" 10 year old in "public" school after getting divorced.

That was a 2 year headache and "joke" ...she is now back homeschooling.

Kai has been in school since she was 3 months old. I was calling everyday to check on her as I was a worrying parent. But she is now almost 3 and loves it. I think moving to kindergarten will be a breeze for me. I hope Smiler

Heh don't be so sure smshy. I thought the same thing until I put my babies on the bus for school. It's like watching your child take a step away from you even if it is a teeny little step.

I'll have to agree with Amy here. Binta has been in "school" (daycare) since she was 2 months old. Yet I still felt stress with the transition to Kindergarten. Keep in mind, she's actually in the same building as me now! One would think that my stress level would have decreased in making that move. We'll be here for you, Smshy, when you break down after sending your baby off to Kindergarten! LOL

The end of the day update is that everything went well. I promised myself that I'd be the model "teacher mom" and totally mind my own business and refrain from peeking in at her all day. I did enjoy the passing conversations with the Principal, the Dean, and other staff members, all who stopped me to tell me what a great day she was having.

And now, I'm waiting for the sitter to arrive, as I'm going out to an Annual Back to School Barbecue with my colleagues.

Has anyone ever seen a group of teachers let their hair down after the first week of school? It can get pretty crazy! LOL

Well, friends! How about an update?

Binta's got only 12 days remaining in her kindergarten year. It has been a wonderful year for both of us. I've been brought to tears several times:

  • during my first parent teacher conference (where I got to be the parent, for once!)
  • during her kindergarten program (The 3 Piggy Opera)
  • receiving a ceramic handprint of her beautiful, delicate little hand

She has grown in so many ways! (Including growing out of her clothes rapidly, and being one of the taller kids in her class, despite being the youngest). She can now:

  • tie her shoes!
  • READ books!
  • WRITE stories and messages for me!
  • ride a 2-wheel bike!

And, she's lost her first 2 teeth!

I'm just overwhelmed right now with proud mama emotions. What a joy to watch her grow! Smiler

I spoke too soon. The year's not quite over yet. Next week, I've volunteered to chaperone a group on her kindergarten field trip to the zoo...

That's right. I have willingly offered to climb aboard a school bus with a load of screaming 5- and 6-year-olds.

*shakes head*
What was I thinking? lol

LOL I just did this with Sam's class! It was fun but SO stressful! We went to the childrens museum and the park, Well one of the staffers from the musuem came on the bus and said that there were several field trips there that day and that there was about 400 kids in the building! OMG it was nuts! Have fun Mom! Big Grin

I chaperoned my daughter's first grade field trip to the zoo last week. OMG!! what a wild fiasco. (frantic head counts every 5 minutes) It's very difficult to keep an eye on all those kids with thousands of other kids running around. (the zoo here schedules school trips all on the same day from around the state). There were some people who put their groups in matching tshirts or hats. I think that's a wonderful idea. You could pick up some matching hats or visors from the dollar store.

I was reading thru that list and nodding at each, have loved experiencing all of that with my 1st grader the past 2 years (now it's 2 programs as they just did 'Frog & Toad' last week, plus he's at 4 teeth). He just got picked for the enhanced learning program which they offer at 2 schools (1 is the one he already attends which is great). And my youngest just had his Pre-K graduation and will be sending him off to Kindergarten in September (yes, that is an emotional day). They make me so proud !

I'm glad she had a great year. My son starts kindergarten this fall - i can't wait! I was also smiling at your list of her new skills. Their growth amazes me. My son's gross motor skills are really improving - he finally did the monkey bars by himself this weekend & shouted out so loud "Mom, mom, i'm doing the monkey bars!" He was so proud (me too). Oh, and as of today he no longer needs me to push him on the swing.

p.s. tripfour - if you are the day personified - then OKAY Smiler
