Learning to Surf The Board |
My daughter is 3 months old, and I know how much easier it is for a child to learn a 2nd language when they are young so I want to immerse her in another language. The problem is that I took 2 years of German and 2 years of Spanish in high school, but I don't remember enough to even consider teaching her myself. I am interested in teaching her German as a 2nd language just because I found it easier than Spanish. Does anyone know any ways of doing this? What I need is a teacher to teach me, and also teach me how to teach her.
Thanks a bunch, Kristin |

"Mod Member on Board" Board Beacon Parent |
Hi, I have the same basic problem.
Mollie my 5 year old is slowly picking up Spanish by watching 'Dora the Explorer' on Cable and she keep's asking me for help.I haven't done languages since I was at school in the70's and early 80's.Iam starting with what I still remember and have bought French,German and Spanish dictionairies and phrase books in an attempt to reverse remember what I had learned.Hoping that it will set off that little spark in my grey matter that say's "I know that". Here in Europe we have a multitude of different languages I want all my girls to have a basic grounding in at least 2 (French and German) as this will add to their job skills later in life. Mark |

"Forever" At A loss for Words - NOT! |
If you can't find a language course for kids (that would of course be the best), and even if you do, a good thing to do is buy a CD with songs for kids, and the book with the texts. The kids will learn the words (without understanding them) within a few days, if they like the music. And you can explain the words to them later. It's mostly to get used to the new sound, to learn pronounce the words, to become familiar with the new language.

Ashlee was taught spanish from birth I would talk to her in spanish and english, I always played music in spanish and english. Same with TV shows let her watch in both languages now at 8 1/2 she is billingual and I am so proud of her. What really works is the method I used when I was a kid, I watched lots of spanish tv and picked it up from tv and friends. My parents wanted us to learn english 1st well it worked out of 4 daughters I am the only billingual one of the bunch I taught myself to read and write and speak it. If at all possible why not see if you have any spanish speaking friends who can teach her.

when my oldest dauhghter was 4-we spent a few months in Mexico and she picked up Spanish so fast! Being back here-Id say the way to learn is just to constantly hear it-watch it on tv...get some books at the library that are Spanish and English. I know firsthand if you dont use what you learn you will forget it...at least at first when you havent spoken it long.
I used to watch Novelas (Span soap operas) that helped me learn more proper Span that the slang Span we speak around here! And you can subtitle movies to learn to pronounce words and what they mean. Good Luck ...or should I say "Bueno suerte"? |
