I am New to SFV |
My ex has never been a good father and since we split up I've been civil to him because it's whats best for my daughter. The last time I've spoken to him was in April when he was trying to be sneaky and get her social security # so he could claim her on his taxes. When I confronted him, he hung up on me. Now it's July and he just called. Usually when he does call he talks more about himself than his daughter.

Depends what stated in the court order. You may have to pay back taxes and penalties if it says he has the right to claim children as dependents on his tax forms.
No if it's sensless Yes if it's an emergency Email if you don't want to speak with him |

I recieve assistance from the state so the $200 child support gets taken out of his check from the state.

ok... this is my understanding about taxes.
He doesn't have to include the amount he pays in CS to you on his Net income (or gross...don't remember) but, if the court order says he can take the child dependent deduction then it usually means you can't. Some court orders have the parents take turns on odd/even years and some just let the custodial parent claim the deduction. If your decree doesn't say anything.... I wouldn't give him the SS# easily. (Anyway, he can get that info himself with the birth certificate.... it's even on the divorce decree if he hasn't lost it) oh i forgot .... if there is no decree, then I believe it is the percentage of time the dependents are with you that determines if you get to take the credit/deduction. Anyway... I like email. |

Hey Cara...
Welcome...... I wouldn't give him SS#....if he wants it bad enough, he can get it himself...you should look into your local state Dept of Rev, etc. to see what the laws are...last thing you want is a tax bill to get out from under! Good Luck and welcome ![]() |

good place to look also regarding your state. The info I gave above refers to federal income tax which you can find on your 1040 instructions for claiming children. |

thanks everyone for your input. My ex hasn't called since last week. No surprise. I guess it wasn't that important otherwise he'd call my house line.
