Ok guys, I didn't know where else to post this. My 2 year is SO constipated all the time and i don't know how to help things move along. Last night he had problems all night, he kept scrunching up and crying finally right before bed, I knew I had to do something so I laid him down and kinda rubbed his tummy until I could pull it out. His little butt was bleeding a ton, I felt so bad for him!

Poor little guy! I used to have to give Julia baby enema's when she was having trouble. They were over the counter, in a little plastic tube with a bulb at the end, they had an orange cap, I am sure that your pharmacist can help. Good luck.

OK, first one I suggest is maybe some Karo syrup and water mixed, it works for babies at least. The other thing I used to do is take a thermometer and cover it with petroleum jelly. Then just act like your taking his temp rectally, it, how should I say this?, slickens things up so everything moves a little easier.

well, i'm a new mommy, and only a 5month old but i would try a stool softener, i cant remember what its called, but you have to insert it in the rectum. and maybe try to give him prune juice or apple/prune juice.

The laxitive is called Baby lax I believe it comes in a white and blue box and yes they are a long insert tube with a round bulb on the end. the cap is orange and they work miracles. I really mean it, when you have a constipated child they work miracles. My son was afraid to poop for a while a would hold it in until his body shook with pain, he would literally get pale and clammy. We relied on Baby lax for a while and the doctor said it was harmless to them. Needless the phase passed and Isaac is now ok. Good luck. Jen.

My daughter had these issues up to ...well now. I bought dried apricots to feed her as a snack. They work just like prunes, taste better, and aren't as harsh as apple juice or laxatives. It'll get the fiber upped in the system.
You'll have to watch for over doing it though, they taste pretty darn good and I found myself dipping into them. I used A & D on her bum when she got a rash. It's antibiotic/antibacterial and I still use it today on the kids scrapes and rashes. It's thick so it literally protects when the diaper becomes soiled again. OK, I have a couple of suggestions. With chronic constipation, you always start with dietary measures. Make sure he is taking lots of fluids every day. And a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and whole grains. I have a friend whose son has difficulty with this. She gives him a stool softener and mixes ground flax seed in his cereal.
In the even that his stool is that hard again, try the suggestion with the vaseline and the baby thermometer. What that does is stimulate the contractions that push stool out. You can also try glycerin suupositories. There are some made for kids, otherwise if you take an adult size one and pinch off just the tip of it. Insert in the rectum, and just use your hand to hold his cheeks together for a few minutes. That should ease it with more lubrication so hopefully the poor little guy wont bleed like that. But make sure that they are just Glycerin suppositories, not the kind with medication in them. Also, there are tons of pediatricians out there. If the one you are going to is not receptive to you, then get a different one. And keep getting different ones until you find one that you feel comfortable going to. It's very important that you can communicate with your child's Dr without being made to feel like a bother. I hope that helps. Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. Mother Teresa |

I will deffinatly try the "Baby Lax". My mom (a nurse) also suggested putting flax seed in his cereal and said that should help. Thank you all for the suggestions I will try anything at this point, my poor little man is just miserable! As for my Dr. , normaly I love her, she is just so dang busy that it seems like they always make me see her physicians assistant which I can't stand. I actually had her last one refuse to see me anymore, (I can get a little nasty when it comes to my children and what I think is best for them!) but she has since then gotten a new one. I am so picky about my Dr. it kinda scares me to try and find a new one!

You can try using pear juice instead of apple. You can always dilute either with water to lesson the chance of diarrhea. Also eating popcorn can help. Also are you giving him vitamins? If so check and see if they have calcium in them. My daughter could not take vitamins with calcium when she was that age, because of this situation.
Good luck |

When my daughter had constipation from time to time, I would simply give her warm water with honey (honey has mild laxative properties) and it worked like a charm. Stay away from sugary juices, as there a big contributor of constipation. Also, make sure he's getting enough fiber in his diet.

My son had the same problems for years when he was younger.I went to doctor after doctor about it.A little Karo syrup in his bottle is good.A warm bath works wonders. It relaxs the bowel muscles is what they told me.We used to get up in the middle of the night when he was hurting and get in a warm bath and it always worked. My son was put on some kind of medicine.I have tried to think of the name and I can't remember it right now,if I do I will post it.It was a clear medicine that he took twice a day that stimulated his bowels.I'm sure your doctor would know.It worked good. Now he doesn't need anything but has Miralax just in case. That is a powder that you mix with juice.I just heard the other day that it is sold over the counter now.Hope something here works for your baby.I know how hard it is to see your child in pain.I used to sit and cry right along with mine.

I had the same trouble with my first born. That has been quite a few years ago but they used to have Gerber baby prune juice in the little jars and I would give him just a bit and I diluted with water. The Karo syrup also does work. I used to mix just a bit with his cereal.

Ok people I have discovered the best cure for this in babies. Bananas. No not the baby-food jarred bananas but the real thing. You can cut it up fine for toddlers and you can mush them up yourself for a baby.[QUOTE] That's interesting, actually it makes perfect sense, since bananas are high in fiber. They're also a great cure for morning sickness (did wonders for me when I was pregnant). Overall I think they're just a great source of nutrition. ~The higher a man stands, the more the word ''vulgar'' becomes unintelligible to him~ |

Any kinda juice (even diluted with half water) will make him have the runs. I tried the prunes and they worked but it was torture getting him to eat them! My Dr. told me that bannanas would plug him up, which makes sense because that's his favorite fruit and he eats them all the time! Warm baths so far seem to be the only thing I have tried that works, so thats what we will stick with for now I guess. However if I turn my back for a second he poops in the tub!
Thanks for all the suggestions I will keep tryin any and all of them that I can |

I've always heard too much juice of any kind can cause constipation. I've never really given my 16 mth old juice, except once in a blue moon and she is VERY regular. Corn, not baby food, but regular corn that you mash up yourself works wonders. Good Luck!

Trey's juice all consists of cranberry and anything. He loves it. Cut it all with 1/2 water, and the kid is a regular machine with no UTI's LOL. He especially loves the Cranberry/Raspberry juice.
