I am New to SFV |
I am hoping someone knows the answer to this
I am a single mom of a 5 year old son who at birth the father and I were not together. However, I did want him to share in his last name so I used my maiden name say Jones and hyphenated his dad's last name say Jones-Smith. We have a good relationship and he is actively involved with his son. I am getting married and I want my son to share my name so I would like to change my maiden name to my new married name so my son's last name would then be Doe-Smith. This would be the last names of his new step father and his dad. Is that weird, or can you even do it this way. I just don't want my son to feel left out of our new name and any siblings would have the new name as well. Yet, I do not want to take the last name of his father away from him. Please help with any info. Thanks! |

Hi-
From what I understand, a name can be legally made or changed into whatever you wish. You local civil courthouse should be able to answer this pretty easily- -Teresa "Heaven does not come with signs to be observed. It is already within you." |

"Cabana King" At A loss for Words - NOT! |
I beleive you'd have to have the bio dads approval to do this and i can't speak for him but i would never allow for another mans name to be tagged on my daughter, especially if he is active in the childs life. I'm a touch confused here though. If your name is jones and bio-dad is smith and the child now has jones-smith and you marry doe and change it to doe-smith then any other children you have would not be doe-smith unless you give them the name from the first bio-dad. Did I read something wrong. Currently he has his mother & fathers name...why change it?

In this country (Holland) you can only do it once in your life and have to have good reasons for it.
Therefore I decided to leave it up to my son to decide for himself when he's older. (He probably won't by now, gotten used to it). Anyway, the procedure is that you have to write a letter to the queen!!! How ridiculous is that!! Bet she doesn't even read it. Makes me think we're still in the middle ages...............(luckily, NOT!!!) |
