Learning to Surf The Board |
I'm hoping some of you will be able to give me some suggestions on how to handle my 5 year old boy Matthew.
He suffers from Childhood depression. The Psych. has told us that when disciplining him to over-compensate him with love and understanding....this is fine and dandy for the little incidents..but when he is seen punching his brother I have a problem showering him with love.. I have pretty much tried every approach..timeouts do not work with him, he will sit there and scream (unfortunatly i'm not one who can tune out screaming)..i have taken things away from him, but it does not phase him. Trying to rationally talk to him..his eyes glaze over and he starts jumping up and down and starting the temper tantrum over. I am at my witts end..i'm tired of the constant struggle that I have with him..does anyone have any suggestions? Kate. |

Not real sure this is what you are looking for, but my son, Dylan was the same way and like you was told to shower him with Love. I had the same problem, How do you show love when your angry and tired, well I did. I was shocked at his reaction. He cried. There was no temper tandrum or attitude. He had hit his 3 year old brother (he was 7 at the time), I walked up to him, got on my knees and simply said "honey I don't know why you are mad, but I do wish you would talk to me about it. Hurting your brother doesn't make you happy and we both know it. I love you." He all but fell into my arms and began crying. Turned out he was being bullied on the bus on his ride to school. Good luck.
