Hello Norwegian Mom,

As Mashell pointed out, this site is for the support of single parents. The first few posts you made, were appropriate and received supportive responses. Your recent ones, however, have been religious or political in nature. While this site has no rules against those topics, they are tolerated when discussed in a way that is respectful toward the people who disagree with you. I'm hoping that the tone in these posts, is largely due to your writing in a non-native language.

Anyway, I'm an American Athiest. I do not believe in anything that can not be proven through repeatable experiment. I was raised Catholic and my whole family is still Catholic, but all the logic and reason in my brain say that they're nuts and I just can't follow them. Still, what good would it do me to convince them that they're wrong? They get a lot of positive things from their faith; for me to try to take that from them would be terrible. It's unlikely I *would* change their minds too. After all, it's not like I can prove that God *doesn't* exist. Really...did you intend to change minds with the things you posted? If you did, you should know that it came off as belittling, and that's certainly not going to change anyone's mind.

Also, is Norway really a less religious country than the US? The data I found indicates they're about the same -> http://www.worldreligionday.org/statistics.html Do you have data that shows otherwise?

As for the US's "going to war in the name of god," I assume that you're speaking of our current occupation of Iraq. You can find the reasons why the US invaded Iraq, in our Secretary of State's address to the UN. Although most of the reasons presented were wrong, none of the reasons were about religion. Honestly, if that's how our invasion is being portrayed in Norway, I thank you for giving us that information! Our politicians certainly did not sell the war to us with that justification. I hope you accept that fact that 0% of the Americans on this site believe that's why we invaded, as evidence that you have received false information about American intentions in Iraq.

Really...since the US has been in that country, haven't we executed their rather secular dictator and replaced him with much more stringent followers of the Islamic faith? Why would we do that if we were "fighting for our God?"

Anyway...I hope this thread turns into an opportunity for understanding, rather than a source of bad feelings, as those are counterproductive to the purpose of the site.

Later,
Bobby

hi bobby

Just thought I would cap this thread off with something we all know... along with the parts that most of us don't.

The Star Spangled Banner

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

We are falible and misguided at times but we will die fighting for your freedom to feel anyway you want about us. You should at least be grateful for that... whether you see the need to rely on God for His blessing and guidance in doing so, or not.

Yeah... but I feel ya man. Really irks me when people don't get how the foundation of this entire government and society is underpinned by the virtues of Christianity and yet wise enough to do exactly as God would have it and give people the FREEDOM to chose or not. Nobody is forced to be a Christian in this nation... but the world should thank God that there are so many that do believe. Even if it is in the virtues alone and not the One that gave them.

Don't want to think about what a Saddam Hussein would do on a global scale if he commanded the forces we have.

Glad you stood up on that one... sorry I wasn't here to express myself when it was a fresh topic.

Better late than never...
