I am New to SFV |
Hello... I need some info from anyone who knows about this subject. I am trying to help a teenager in my neighborhood. She has a 12 month old and is all alone. Her parents have recently disowned her and she is living in a house that has drugs going in and out of it. I told her if she ever needed anything to please come to my husband and I for help. Well, the ohter night she showed up at my door crying and needing help with getting herself out of the situation she is in. She has refused in the past to get anykind of welfare support. I told her that's what is there for is to help people like her. I suggested that she go to the local tech college and get a degree. She is very interested in doing the same thing I did (dental assisting) only 10 months. I offered to watch her little girl for her. But, I need to know where to start on getting her financial help. College grants, help for housing and food while she goes to school. Is there anything outthere like that for her? Please let me know. I told her I would get all the info she needed to get her feet off the ground. I am having trouble doing that and would like all suggestions. Thank you. feel free to e mail me privatly if you wish. My e mail is kevikmarta*netzero.net or even a reply on here is fine. Thank you!

The first thing I would do is go to the local technical college and speak with a financial advisor. This person will have loads of information about loans, grants, scholarships, etc. When I went to college, I borrowed the maximum amount of money I was given, even though I didn't need that much for tuition. I used the rest to pay a babysitter, buy food, birthday and Christmas presents, etc. for my little one. I now have a large school loan, but I have my college degree plus I am working on my masters and nobody can ever take that way from me. Hope this helps! Good luck! This lady doesn't know how lucky she is to have you helping her out.

Marta,
try the local Department of children and families. They will be able to point you in the right direction. Maybe the HRS ... I do not know where you are but there are many services out there .. but you have to look and ask. FYI .. do not speak up and say you are willing to house her and the baby.. the circumstances will not get emergency status. Yes the counselor at school will be an invaluable source of info. Good Luck, Carla |

Marta,
She may be able to get some assistance for school and daycare from welfare also. Welfare to Work program. And yes they should be able to get her emergency foodstamps etc. right away and perhaps help with emergency housing. I hope that all goes well for her, things do change for those that want it and work at it, she is lucky to have you helping her indeed. Just a small word of caution, keep yourself somewhat gaurded in all of this for your own protection, bless you for helping her out, but be sure you can't get hurt in the process. |

I can try to help a little, I am a single mother of 2 and trying to go back to school myself. First you need to get her to the local Health and Human Services office. There she can fill out an application for assistance for everything from Rent to Food. Then to see if she qualifies for grants and other government loans she can apply for assistance at the FAFSA website. I hope this helps. God Bless

I would first like to say that you are an extremely kind-hearted individual for trying to help the woman in need. I am a young single mother (22 years old)attending university and I am pretty amazed with all of the help that I've recieved to get to where I am now. I also refused to accept the help welfare offered when I first found out that I was pregnant, but I eventually took it because there was no other option. As far as I'm concerned, when a child is at risk, it's the government's role to protect him/her.
The government provided the financial means for me to pay for rent/food/clothing. Mind you, living off of what the government hands out is not that easy. You can't expect to live in luxury, but if you budget your money properly, you'll be able to "get by". I'm on a student loan through the government right now. They give me the maximum amount because I'm a single mother. I also recieved $5,000.00 in bursaries that I don't have to pay back this year. It's tough but if the woman you are trying to help wants to get her life together, it is possible. I was pregnant when I was eighteen and I'm 22 now. There are so many loopholes in the system that it is possible to find money if you do your research. I wish you guys good luck! |
