I am 19 and a single mother of the most beautiful baby girl in the world!! she will be 1 year old on the 19th and i can't help but want to give her the world. HOWEVER! i don't have the resources right now to give her the world. i am legally blind and i recieve an ssi check each month. but since i live with my father and his income is far to high to qualify for and grants or scholarships for school, i am in a bit of a pinch. My dad won't help me pay for school, he wants me to move out before school starts, so i'm trying to figure out how i'm to pay for rent, school, food diapers, clothes, milk and soooo much more. i feelvery overwhelmed and i don't know where i am supposed to turn to next, i've tried looking for scholarships online, but again i am running in circles. i am hoping that someone somewhere will be able to lend a helping hand. Please, if any of you who read this have any information or words of wisdom to give, i'm all ears!!! thank you!!!

Look into the college that you are planning on going to and ask the financial aid office what criteria there are for them to consider you and independent. At the college I attend, because I have a child and I was not claimed on my mothers taxes I am considered independent. Hope that helps

Hi,

I'm was in a similar situation. I live with my parents and have a 8 month old baby. I thought that since I lived with my parent's I wouldn't qualify for financial aid because my parent's make way too much. Then I found out that since my parent's don't claim me and I have a dependent I would automatically qualify for financial aid.
My advice to you is to find a place to live, get settled in there and get some public assistance. If you are on public assistance you also qualify for financial aid, grants and scholarships. I would then go and talk to the school that you plan to attend. Explain to them that you are 19, have a child and live on your own (aren't supported by your parents) they will help you get the money you need for school. They will if you ask also help you find scholarships and grants that offer money for housing, child care etc.. You will be supprised what kind of help is out there. You may also want to get hooked up with your local child and family services. They can help you with moving out, and getting all that you need.
If you have any other questions please feel free to email me. Chicagomom1 at aol.com

Hi Nikki,

I'm a single mom of a 10 yr old girl. I work and go to school at the Univ South Fl. I work really close with the Finan Aid office so maybe I can give you some info. Once you move out of your dad's home you will be considered independent because you have a child(usually you have to be 24 to be independent). You may be aware of the FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form but if not go to the site www.fafsa.ed.gov. At that site you can find all the info you need about government aid for school. Also go to Fastweb.com. It's a national scholarship search database. I hope this helps and good luck with your search.
