Bradley,
Everyone seems to keep asking the same question. I recently went back to school myself. I thought the same thing... single parent ... probably more grants or scholarships to get... no luck in that department. I can say since you have full custody you are able to claim head of household on your income tax and this affords you more financial assistance when filing. Go to the FAFSA web site when you have chosen a school and fill out the forms. I got notification in 2 weeks as to what I was entitled to. It was better than I thought. I ended up with grants and loans. The loans are so low in interest and deferrable until you finish school.
I do not know what area you are looking into but check out adult studies programs. These programs (such as University of Phoenix sattelites) offer you a choice of times to attend class and several different venues (attend class, flexnet and online) to suit your schedule. It is a bit more expensive for the degree compared to say a community college but when I weighed the schedule, a flat fee for my books online (not $50+ each for 2-5 books per class) and the location, it is more cost effective. These classes are fast paced .... 5 weeks each and do not follow a conventional semester schedule. You can get finished with a 4 year degree in 4 years. Imagine that!
I wish you much luck. This is one of the best decisions I have made in a long time!
Carla
