I just put the boys into a low income preschool. I am finding that they are having more issues with the boys then the "regular" child care facility did. They dont seem to be learning as much or sharing what they learned like they did before. Has anyone ever experienced being treated differently from low income child centers? I dont want to discriminate but i really feel like they dont do the things they need to be doing. They are suggesting that i separate the boys, which i am not totally against, but i am afraid that this will lead to other suggestions...

I think i might be over thinking things. These are my first children and i am not totally sure how to take things sometimes. I know that i take things very person sometimes. gah!! starting to ramble again.

Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated

Jessica

My 2 older girls went to Head Start. While I am very appreciative that they had this social opportunity I was not to happy with their educational practices. I was VERY involved with HS and even represented my center and County at a State and National level. The government sets STRICT guidelines for the teachers that must be followed. The children are tought according to DAP (Developmentaly Appropriate Prctice). This was back in the mid 90's so things may have changed since then. The kids could not color or draw on papers that were already made (pictures run off for them), they were not taught their ABC'S or how to read and write. My 34 year old has gone to a privatly owned daycare/pre-school and I can see the advancement in her book smarts compared to when my daughters were entering Kindergarten. I am on a program thru the State that helps pay for her daycare but the Gov. has no say so as far as the cirriculum (sp) goes.

I felt like that when my kids were pre-school aged at times and then I shopped around.

I think the way the children are treated depends on how passionate the owner and caregivers are. Also, with poor management skills, I'm sure the children would reflect a poor environment.

I believe many people are quick to judge the parents of children which reflects on them. However, they are just children and the proper daycare management skills would create a more pleasent place.

Is there any way to look at more preschool programs or are you limited to this one?

saddly the voucher only covers this school. i am told that there are grants in my county but that is another waiting list i have to get on. I was on this one for over a year.

I have found some other things out that i am not happy with. I have dropped the boys off late on a few occations and i have seen what the breakfast were (now i understand why they have issues) they were feeding them fruit loops and apple jacks! I dont think that i am a health freak or anything but i am very adimate that my 4 year olds dont get junk food on a regular basis. They know that with mommy it is a treat that they have to earn. Ok back on track.... i am changing my working hours so i can sit down every morning and feed them what i want them to eat ( healthier foods) and i am hoping that this will help resolve some of the "issues" the teachers have been having with them not being able to sit down(not being on a sugar high for most of the morning)

My girls went to HS not to long ago. I am not sure if it's different from state to state but here they did learn their abc's. They also learned many other things such as manners, sharing not only toys but their feelings. I was very impressed with the HS program. Now my kids are on a voucher at a private daycare. I was on a list for a few years.
Maybe you can talk to the daycare about the breakfast cereal. When my girls first started at the daycare they had that kind of cereal and now they switched to healthier cereal and they also serve soy milk.

Good Luck!
