At A loss for Words - NOT!
Posted
Hello to all teen mothers and anyone else that would like to reply. I need help and I need it fast... oh the next 24 hours... lol (not joking)
I am presenting a speech tomorrow night. My portion of the speech is about why we need sex education in schools from the child/teen point of view. I have interviewed and done much research but would like more opinions if you can help.
Thank you so very much in advance!
Carla

I think that you need the point of view from another teen because, it is so real. It is like when you hear something from your parents while you are a kid, you never listen. It never fully sinks in and a lot of times it sounds stupid, until you hear it from someone else. I never thought I would get pregnant, I always thought I was too smart for that or that it couldnt happen to me, but it happens, and a lot easier than you could ever imagine. I wish I would have listened to other people who had gotten pregnant, or had a girl come in and talk about how hard it is. I would love to talk to someone and help them out like that, because after you go through this, you realize that the sex wasnt worth it. I just hope you can get your point accross... it really would be a help I think for teenagers to hear it first hand, I think if I would have, I wouldn't be in this situation now, struggling, trying to finish high school. And I have support from my parents and tons of help and it is still so hard, I cant imagine how it would be if you didnt have any help.

I think that this issue is very important. If you hear this kind of stuff from a person your own age that has been through the same thing you tend to listen more and really think things over. Let's face it we all thought our parents and teachers didn't know anything, and know look what situation we are all in

Thank You both so much!
I have this perspective in my speech but it was great to get some "back up". I remember (yes we at 40 do still remember being a kid/teen .. lol) feeling this way toward info give from my parents. I try very hard to keep the lines of communication with my daughter open and on a current and onbelievable level for my daughter. She is broaching that age where she needs proof from someone other than mother as well.
Anyone else has any input I would appreciate it very much as I still have a few hours.
Thank You.

why we need sex education in schools from the child/teen point of view

We need that subject in schools specifically because that is where the kids and teens are and thats where theyre used to LISTEN and LEARN. Here there is a small chance that some of it might sink in.
If you talk to your kid/teen about sex she/he will either not want to listen, or be embarrassed, or both. At school it will be presented as any other subject, and there will be a test, so there might actually be a little part of the info that really comes across.

The fact that it is taught in school also emphasizes that its an important subject, just as important (at least) as math and geography and history. That message should also come across.

Another message is also that the subject concerns everyone, and already at a young age.

If the message is presented from a kid/teens point of view, that emphasizes that there are actually some kids/teens that are concerned with the issues. It makes them all part of a big group, it signifies that those are subjects my peers think about too. And actually discussing them inbetween us (us kids/teens) is possible and shows were becoming adults, which is a good thing.

just brainstorming

and then we need sex education (period) to control (= avoid) teen pregnancies-OBVIOUS (but surely not to kids)

I will try to think of more.(youre lucky were a 6 hours ahead of you Wink )
