My poor kid has been coughing non-stop all day long. I've tried everything I can think of..she's well medicated, i've slathered her with Vicks rub, she's been sucking on Rhinopops, warm tea w/lemon and honey, the vaporizer has been going in her room all day. Nothing is giving her relief! Anyone have any suggestions to try?

This is going to sound odd but since it's 40 degrees here I'm going to assume it's colder up there. Wrap her up and take her outside. The cold air will help constrict her breathing passages and that should help relieve the cough a little. If it's not colder than 40 outside there.....this is going to sound even more odd...... let her stick her head in the freezer for a couple minutes. Seriously this does help.

OMG! Thank you so much! It really did help. She's standing with her coat on at the back door now (I just raised the storm window so she didn't have to go completely outside) and all is finally quiet. I never would have thought of this. Thank you again.

Lol I told somebody in another thread that I'm the go-to gal for sick kids. Oh and you said that she's well medicated but you didn't say what you were giving her. I know that cough sounds awful and it's miserable but that cough is what's getting all that bad stuff out of her. Try Mucinex. It thins out the mucus to make her cough more productive so they get better quicker. I'm telling you it's the best thing since anti-biotics!!!

Well she had Robitussin and tylenol during the day and I just gave her a bit of NyQuil for bedtime. One of my friends told me to put vicks on the bottom of her feet and cover them with warm socks. This worked great also. She's sleeping now (finally) and I only hear a little bit of coughing. I'll pick up some Mucinex tomorrow for her. I've heard many good things about it. Poor kid has to me so sore from all that coughing Frowner

Oh yeah they make a Mucinex that does have a cough surpressant in it so it does quiet the cough a little but helps little bit of a cough to be more productive. Kinda kills 2 birds with one stone and they make it in pediatric formula too.

Thanks! I'm going to check that out tomorrow. She's been coughing alot of that stuff up, but then I think she swallows it (blech!). She's had a few puking spells today from it. It's hard because she's still too little to understand to spit it out. As fast as it comes up she swallows. I just hope i'm not awoken in the middle of the night with a "mommy! I throwed up!"

You know what's better than any medication? Fluids. Lots and Lots of fluids. Water, juice, popsicles, gator aid, whatever she's willing to take. Aside from that it sounds like you are doing everything you can. I hope she starts to feel better soon.

Oh yea. She's been on a steady diet of OJ and Black Cherry flavored Propel water as well. She just coughed herself out of bed...literally. This is going to be a long night I think. *sigh*

I'm a big fan of standing in the bathroom with the hot water running to create steam. Helps settle a coughing fit. My daughter hates that and cries when I take her in there. But crying is not a bad thing as it opens up the airway and helps clear out the congestion. She usually falls asleep after that.

Be careful with the electrolight replacements such as Gatorade and Pedialyte. Too many of those things and you can go into renal failure. It's tempting to use them when your child is sick but they really shouldn't be used unless there's a fever and evidence of dehydration such as dry lips and cotton mouth. It's better to stick to good old fashioned water unless your doctor says otherwise.

Nah I've just had a lot of sick-kid experience and I had a few years of training/work as an EMT. You wouldn't believe the goofy questions people in my neighborhood used to ask me like "is this broke?" Well let me drag out my x-ray glasses and we'll have a look. You know that kind of stuff.

Ryan is going to be the death of me though. I can't decide if he's really lucky or really unlucky. He had a Brown Recluse spider bite at 6 months. He had a hairline skull fracture at 11 months (he got a little too friendly with the TV stand). He had a black eye right after that and of course it was in the exact same place as the fracture. He's not even 1 1/2 yet!!! All these could have been seriously things but he skated through them with only the littlest scar on his leg from the spider bite. God help me when he starts sports!

I think I'd be purchasing all the football pads and helmets just to get him through the toddler years!! I've been lucky that neither me or my kids has ever had serious injuries!! (knock on wood immediately to prevent the youngest from falling down the stairs tonight)

Yeah I'm planning on covering the entire house in foam-rubber. The only serious injury for my kids so far is Katie trying to rip the tip of her finger off last summer. She got it caught in a bike chain and had to have it surgically glued back on. They couldn't stitch it because it was right through the nail bed. Thank God my friend was here because when I saw how bad it was I gave Katie a hand towel and told her to put pressure on it and ran out the door. I yelled something to Melissa like "watch the boys I'm taking Katie to the hospital" and took off. She didn't have any idea Katie was even hurt and was completely confused by the time I got back with her. Melissa knows I don't get freaked out unless it's pretty bad so she didn't question.

Come to think of it Katie seems to be my clutz. She dislocated her finger in a closet door one time. I grabbed it and reduced it before the joint could swell. She didn't know it at the time that I was helping her. She just thought mommy was being mean and didn't believe she was really hurt.

Yeah she the proverbial "bull in a china shop" I guess.
