Our 12 yr old cat Comet has never been impressed with our now 2 yr old black Lab coming to live with us since she was 8 wks old and the dog has never been impressed with the cat either. My Mom, son and I had a discussion about a week ago that we think Comet needs oompany so decided to adopt a kitten at the Humane Society. My son picked out a female 6 wk old brown tabby kitten and we picked her up today after I got off work. We let her run around to explore for awhile after we got home then we decided to introduce her to Comet. He liked her right away (not in a sexual way as he is neutured) but in a fatherly way. She took to him right away too. He let her use his litter box even though she has her own, let her eat his food even though she has her own ( then they started sampling each others food.) When she tried to go into areas that Comet obviously deemed unsafe he would meow at her and stand in front of her to not let her pass -ie- she tried to go behind the fridge and he wouldn't let her. He let her play with all his toys but whenever she tried to do what he is not allowed to do like jump on the table or counters he wouldn't let her. My son said "Hey! He's taking care of her and telling her the house rules! He's being like a Daddy to her! He doesn't have a wife because Princess is a dog so she can't be his wife so he is a single father!" After my son went to bed tonight the cats got real quiet so I went into the room where their beds , dishes and litter boxes are and saw the cutest thing! the kitten was half asleep in her little bed and Comet was sitting beside her bed lovingly watching her going to sleep - he was purring away to himself. WELL, my presence in the room quickly woke that curious kitten up and she got up and started jumping all around again! Comet looked up at me with a look of "Great Mom! See what you did?!" on his face, let out a loud "MEEOOWW!" at me then hit my leg with his paw! Seriously! (Thankfully he is declawed -- both he and her are strictly house cats.) Evidently he had finally got her to settle down to sleep and I woke her up and ruined his moments of peace! (We all know how it feels to finally get a baby off to sleep then have some idiot wake the kid up, right!?) I even told him I was sorry! Sounds like they've finally settled down again so I am not going in that room now to check and possibly wake her up again! I'll let the old boy have some rest! Our dog is not thrilled and looks depressed even though I keep hugging and kissing the top of her head and telling her how much we all love her and always will.

lol...too funny. Cats are amazingly intelligent animals... I have two myself. Mine are like bachelor roommates...one's the rowdy bully frat boy and the other is the nerd who complains about his rowdy roomate.

k, you have people from both sides of the pond laughing at this. Unfortunately there are too many of us who understand this from the "single parent" point of view.

Aww, what a cute story. Sounds like one I would tell. It's apparent that you love your animals very much. I have two old boys that are best buds, and always sleep on top of each other on top of me. My Casey, who is 17lbs, likes to sleep on my pillow, on top of my head, which I usually don't mind, but he will **** on my hair and start batting at my face to wake me up when he wants breakfast.

Aww such a sweet story. It kinda reminds me of my cat and dog believe it or not. My dog is 4yrs and my cat is 5yrs. So she has the big sister type authorihty over my dog and you would think they are siblings. Ok and yes my dog has a personality crisis. Let's just put it one way she will actually catch a bird and present to me like my cat SHOULD! Anyways....there will be the occional cat fight w/my cat and a neiborghood cat and my dog will come to the resuce. She will get in between my cat and the other one and chase that mean kitty away from her kitty! She maybe able to chase and toture her cat but she'll be damn if anyone else do it to her kitty. She has chased bigger dogs away from her kitty too! They suggle together and are actaually quite the pair. They both go out in the morning together. It's acutally really sweet. They would be lost with out each other.

See I guess it's true opposites to attract! Big Grin

Thats a cute theroy from your son! Your cat is a single daddy now. Now we have another possible member for SFV! LOL

I laughed so hard when I read this you guys. I thought I was going to cry. I dont have any animals. Someday I am hoping to get Kai a puppy when she's old enough that it won't knock her on her butt with it's tail. Then, maybe I will have a story like this to post.

AWWW! When I was little, we had a cat who, when we got a dog, trained him. This cat had so much confidence in himself. Anyway, we found a kitten in the back yard, and we were worried about how the cat would take her. She was on the couch, the cat came up, meowed like welcoming her, and licked her. You could see that the kitten (a female) fell instantly in love with the cat (a male). She always loved him. He would let her "nurse" on him, it was so funny and cute.
