I don't think that you have to change sons last name if the out come showed the person to not be the bio-parent, I do think that the bio parents name should be removed.

Is my understanding correct that the paternity test showed that they were not the bio-parent?

But this is JMHO

I have been told that you do not have to change the child's name but you now have the option of putting the biological father's name on the birth certificate.

In my state the name you put on the child's birth cert is valid and can be changed easily within the first two years. After that you must contact the vital statistics office to determine how the legal document is to be changed. As for changing your child's name, no you do not have to change your child's name to have the same last name as his/her father, however, if you have established paternity and the court has filed papers determining paternity, the father's name will be placed on the birth certificate. I have just gone through this issue with my daughter, but my daughter's father acknowledged paternity on his own and I filed the papers. Hope this helps. Smiler
