I am 18 yrs old, my mother died when i was 12. When my mother died my grandma took custody of me.

My mom was receiving child support from my dad but when she died my dad never paid child support to my grandma.

Could my mother's death have ended the child support contract? if not is there any way for my grandma to sue my dad for all the years of unpaid child support? If yes is it still possible now that I'm 18?

Thank you for your time. I know this is a forum more for single parents and not kids but my gram doesn't know how to work a computer.

I am not up on american law as I am from the other side of the world, but are you still in education because some laws over here specify that a parent has to pay whilst the kid is still in education which can go past 18. In reality the money was ordered for your up keep, you would have to see the original court order to determin who the money was order to and for, it may have been you as apposed to your mother in which case your father will be liable for the monies owed over the years.

I would strongly advise that you go see a lawyer imediately to assess your situation.
It must be so hard for you to have lost your mum and then your father used that situation to get out of his responsabilities.

Let us know how you get on, you are most welcome on the board as like us you are dealing with absent fathers etc and the implications of such a situation.

I bet your mom and grandma are so proud of you, you have obviously grown into a confident young lady and I for one hope your future is as bright as can be.

Keep in touch

Your mothers death doesn't excuse your Father's child support debt. Contact your local or state child support enforcement agency...they will be able to help you. And their services are free.
