Getting My Feet (Board) Wet
Posted
I have decided to get a divorce. This is a little background. I am still living with my wife and kids. We both agreed to this decision and both agreed that I will have absolute custody of the children. She said Just give me the documents and Ill sign them.. I dont need child support for the kids. The children are 9-boy and 2-girl. We reside in Minnesota and in September I will be moving to California.

My question is what is the fastest and cheapest way to get a divorce?

Thanks!

Have you contacted the Courthouse or anyone to ask if you can file without an attorney? I think you can. I'm not sure who you would speak with to find out. Of course an attorney - can you meet with an attorney that has first meeting without retainer?

I also found this book.

How to File for Divorce in Minnesota: With Forms (Legal Survival Guides) (Paperback)
by Thomas Tuft

Book Description
This practical guide clearly outlines the steps involved in obtaining an uncontested divorce in Minnesota, but at the same time can serve as a valuable resource for those who have determined that using an attorney is in their best interest. Easy-to-use, blank tear-out forms and instructions for completing the forms are included in the book.

About the Author
Thomas Tuft is the owner of his own firm which focuses on family law with an emphasis on interstate and international child custody. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Ramsey County Bar Association. He received his law degree from the University of Minnesota and currently practices in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Hi Jeff I am in Texas and I had found a do-it-yourself packet at our local office shop. So long as there is nothing to fight over in court. I believe it has to notorized before going to court. The packet only cost me $25.00 and I was gonna use it, until I found out my ex was gonna fight me over some land we had. And our library has quite a few books about do-it-yourself divorces- you should check into it. Good luck!!

Jeff72,

There is no cheap and fast way to get a divorce. It is cheaper to keep her...haven't you heard the song. No really - this is not as easy as a business deal. This is far more valuable.

...and fast gets you in trouble and leads to regrets.

Settle for a separation until you have had a chance to get away and think clearly.

My advice: Slow down.

email me and I will give you a copy of a petition and the final divorce decree and help you fill it out. Call your court house and find out the cost. You must submit the petition first because they set the court day by that and she must sign a waiver saying she received it and then type of the final decree for the day of court and have her sign it before or the day of by notary. email only1synergy@yahoo.com. The cost varies per state and I will help you find the states family codes for custody. I am helping a bunch of people in texas and well it's expensive and you are not asking for support so at least I can help you with documents to save on alittle cost because of the long term cost of raising your two wonderful children. All petitions and final decrees are almost the same.
