My husband of 13 yrs. left me 2 days before we were supposed to move. Our apartment was already rented out and I had quit my job. He left to another state and another woman. He took all the money and left me with nothing. The checking account was in his name, so he closed it and left. I am raising a 14yr old, and I am off work because of a short term disablity.I do get child support but it doesn't even cover the rent. I need help!!!!!!! Does anyone know of any finacial help or grants for single parents in need of help. Please let me know.

What a creep!! How someone could do that do his child and wife I will never understand. I hope you are holding up okay. I know that the laws are different in Canada, but can you go to welfare for temporary help! I know that you can in canada, but like I said I am not too sure if you can where you live. Does he phone and or come and visit hid daughter? I sure hope so! Take care of yourself and try to remember that no matter what everything has a way of working itself out. Jayme Wink

Hi Lyn...Wow, talk about being blindsided by someone!! Go to your Department of Family Services Office (DFS) immediately. You probably qualify for emergency foodstamps as well as a monthly foodstamp allowance (it's issued as a debit card), Medicaid, and Section 8 housing (there is probably a long waiting list for privately-owned subsidized housing but they will probably offer to get you into public housing immediately. Your rent will probably only be a few dollars/month and that way any money you recieve in child support can go towards other things.

Explain your situation to the caseworker they assign to you. Bring in any proof of disability, child support, etc. Just remember, your taxes paid into the system all those years you were working...this is the type of situation those programs are there for.

While you're at it...look into getting the child support amount modified. Modification requires a greater than 20% change in income or child-related expenses of either party...you not working probably qualifies. It could take 6 months to a year though.

Good luck and keep your chin up...I know you can pull through this.
