I have 2 bi-racial kids in school. My oldest child is in Pre-K and my youngest is in Head Start this year. They bouth know they are black and white. My youngest son spends every other weekend with his black side of the family and they also take my oldest they love both of my kids even though the youngest one is their blood. My youngest love to ask questions in class, while the other day he said he was black and a kid questioned the teacher. I'm glad that all the teaching staff at the school knows me and his granparents(black). Micah my oldest, is dark skinned blue eyes and brown hair and Cameron my youngest, is white skinned brown eyes and black hair. They tell everybody that they are black and white. I'm glad that they never questioned me more I just always told them that they are bi-racial.
What bought them to tell people they were black and white: one afternoon we were doing there colors and a picture of a dalmation came on the page and Micah said mom that puppy is just like us and i said what do you mean and cameron said that the puppy is bi-racial just like us his black and white. |

I am the proud single father of a bi-racial son. He is asian-american and boy does he look asian. I was at the mall shopping last year and a lady asked me "have you had him since birth?". It took me a moment to really understand what she was asking since he is my son. She automatically thought since he was asian that he was adopted. I politely replied "Yes I have, even before then as a matter of fact". By the look on her face I don't think she caught on. It just amazed me that someone would have the nerve to ask something like that without even knowing me.

People can be shocking! But we can certainly give them a lot to think about without being as cheeky as them, well done to you. You handled it very well and i bet that woman wishes she'd kept her gob shut now as it may have clicked later!
If only everyone could see it as simply as being a mix like a dalmation doggy (it was really cute!) |

Getting My Feet (Board) Wet |
Good for you. You made her look like a fool and put her in her place all without using foul language. Can you teach me how to do that? (smile).
My son is bi-racial-light skinned, straight dark brown hair with red strands and I am dark with curly darkbrown hair. When strangers see my son and I together, they assume that he is someone else's child. I have had people ask me if I was babysitting. After 8yrs, I have learned how to ignore and stare. You can accomplish anything if you believe. |

I am New to SFV |
I have three daughters... all by the same man but my oldest is light skinned with reddish brown hair like my side and the two youngest have dark skin and dark hair. It amazes me how people have the nerve to think they have the right to ask me if all my children have the same daddy !!

I was in McD's yesterday, and there was a little boy who was in a special "stroller". I dont know what his ailment was, but I was curious. I didnt ask. My daughter asked what happened to him, and the boys mother said, "He's fine." Sometimes you hear that parents of children with special needs want you to ask, rather than stare. You just never know. Its not that people are trying to be mean, its just curiosity.
My unborn child is bi-racial, so maybe I speak to soon. I dont know what she is going to look like, or how people are going to react. I just hope that I will remember that some people dont really know how to ask. |
