Getting My Feet (Board) Wet
Posted
I have a screen name, an avatar....good to go. I too am a single mom, 40 something single mom with two daughters.... 12 and 15. They are great but it's wild realizing that time moves so fast and that they are going to be out of the house before I know it. I have to keep looking to my future, working hard to have something for myself when they go off to college... anyone feel that way

Yea, I know how you feel.
My son is 16 and suddenly I have a lot more time for myself cos he is out and about (school, work, friends).........

finally I can start thinking about what I want to do with my life in about 2 or 3 years........strange, cos you get so caught up in the mothering role and always putting your own stuff on the back burner................

I made a list of a bunch of things that I want to do...

Live in London
Go to Cooking School
Write a Book

Yes, yes all ambitious but why not?
It's so different in the single parent world because I know that I CAN move to Europe if I want when the kids go off to college (the idea of visiting me somewhere else is like candy in their eyes).

My couple friends are thinking about what their married relationship will be like once the kids are out of the house, so they are still factoring in another person's needs. It will be strange to just focus on my needs. (Watch now, I'll meet a wonderful man and not want to go anywhere...lol)

I think it's exciting contemplating the future. Other moms tell me you're never really finished with parenting. I'm not too sure about that one.

I tell my kids that I'm sticking around michigan for their first Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday homecoming during their freshman year. But then, they're going to have to find me. I'm going where the sun shines more days during the year.

Maybe, I'll even have time to cultivate relationships.
I'll have a pool to swim in everyday.
A thriving business that challenges me.

What do you dream of for the future?
