I read to my son and then reads to my at night. The series "How to Train Your Dragon" is fun for that age and there 12 books right now. It's not overly hard and still funny for that age range.
Another fun series is "Creature from my closet" --sounds scary but it's not. I wouldn't allow my son to read anything scary.
Another idea;we go to the library-we listen to books on CDs in the car when we drive home from school. He live in a city where there is a lot of traffic so it takes a while to get home.
