Unhappy Evicted and nowhere to go

Hi all...I'm new to this forum posting stuff but I thought I'd give it a try. So the basics....I'm a single mom supporting 3 kids ages 20,7 and 6. I'm a disabled veteran, full time student while also putting my daughter through college. Got behind in rent due to unforeseen college expenses that weren't covered by financial aid nor my GI bill. Had a hearing this past Monday in hopes of working out an agreement with my landlord/mgmt company but to no avail. Have been looking for places to live in the Orange Park/Fleming Island area of Jacksonville so I can keep my sons in the same school. Worst part of the whole issue is my monthly VA check was garnished back to the VA for an overpayment of my GI bill back in the fall term. So we're living on nothing until they send me my check. Problem is trying to find a place to live ASAP. I'm scared, I have severe depression which isn't helping. I'm not trying to whine or boohoo about my situation. We have no family or friends in the area that we can count on to help. Have exhausted every avenue of public assistance but due to the county I live in its limited if any at all. Not sure what I'm asking for accept maybe help trying to find a place to live. My finances are stable now with school money paid back and aid coming in. Just have to figure out how to convince someone to let me rent so my kids and I aren't living in a motel or in our car.

Dear Forkchk,

I'm sure it's difficult to be in this situation, especially with children. I live in NY so no help that way but does the college offer any housing options? Or emergency loans? There are homeless shelters but I know that is difficult to think about with kids. I understand you that this is temporary, but in NY there are options for housing vouchers at motels for homeless situations.
There are Salvation Armys here for homeless families, and YMCA's. Please keep your pride and put a roof over your kids head. I hope this helps, please know people care. Keep trying until you find someone to help you. Christine

Hoping some Fla members can come and give you exact resources... but I'd start with the women's shelters and work from there if you've already tried all the assistance type resources. There is something out there for you, it is a matter of finding it. HUGS and Prayers to you, I can imagine your fear right now. Also, be sure to talk to everybody and anybody including your doctor or even and er visit to help you find a direction/numbers/etc to go in... er's tend to have resources at their finger tips....

Re-mom made a great point. No hospital will leave you stranded with children, they will offer options, some you may not be aware of. Please try, even if you are tired with depression, I understand. Just try and call the ER if you are to tired. There is help, and people who care.

Hi There and Welcome to our little corner of insanity.

The first thing you need to do is get to a land-line phone and call 2-1-1
That is the number for the united Way. They can point you in the direction of some possible resources that you may not have thought of.

Have you talked to Catholic Charities? they'll help you even if you're not catholic, especially when you have young kids.

Or if you have your own church that you attend, talk to the pastor/minister and see what they can do to help you out.

Most of all, Good luck!
