Sorry, I was just told a few weeks ago that I'll have to take a remedial Pre-Algebra class before I can get my degree as well. I took Algebra II in HS, but I'm so rusty (read OLD) that I can't remember it. English, I clep'ed out of both, Math and Science - NO THANKS!

1/4x+6/4x = 7

7/4x = 7

7/4 = 7x

1/4 = x

I didn't explain my solution the first time so here goes

1/4x+3/2x=7

find common denominator (4x), so

3/2x = 6/4x

which makes

1/4x+6/4x = 7

Add fractions

7/4x = 7

muliply both sides by x

7/4 = 7x

divide both side by 7

1/4 = x

Here is another approach

multiply both sides by x since (1/4x + 3/2x) = 1/x(1/4+3/2)

x(1/4x+3/2x) = 7x = 1/4 + 3/2 = 7x

common denominator

1/4 + 6/4 = 7x

add fractions

7/4 = 7x

divide by 7 to simplify

1/4 = x

I have to do this stuff all the time with my 15 year old, she can whip out a english paper in minuets, but for some reason she can't remember the math end of it even though I have explained it hundreds of times and she gets it when I do. Only thing is I get rusty because its been a while sense college and I have to reteach/refresh myself because I simple don't use algebra at work. Ugh, when and if she goes into calculus I will have to reteach myself that also, those days will be interesting if I don't have a nervious break down first.

My first job out of college I was working with mathematical modeling. It was kind of cool that I got to use calculus on the job after all those years of studying.

my calculus is quite rusty now. I think I could still figure out the derivatives of cosine and sine.

Its when they got off integrating log funtions that I scratched my head a bit, lets not mention ODE and linear algebra , but I made it through, sadly if I wanted to go back and finish my engineering degree I would probly have to take a lot of the math over just to cover what I forgot.

Wow- Im lost!! I am horrible at math- and its funny, cause I now work in an accounting related field with numbers all day!! HAHA

Oh, and its been proven that generally speaking, women tend to excel at English and History, men tend to excel at Math and Science.

No problem, though I can't make any guarantees as my mind may have rusted over.

Another warning, my 8 year old asked me the other day if the universe ended somewhere. After an hour and a half of discussing quantum mechanics, cosmology, the general and special theories or relativity he told me to stop.

Clear both fractions. multiply both sides of the equation by 4

4(1/4x) + 4(3/2x) = 4(7)

x + 6x = 28

Collection like terms

7x = 28

divide both sides of the equation by 7

7x / 7 = 28 / 7

x = 28 / 7

x = 4

I need that drooling smilie.
