Default Laziness?

Hello fellow parents! My son is 13 and while he is a good kid, he has no initiative to want to try anything that takes effort, or is "hard". Any activity that takes any amount of effort or that he has no interest in, he won't even attempt. I bought RockSmith and an electric guitar to try to get him interested in learning how to play, but he's not interested. Even homework is a battle. Is there anything I can do to teach him to just TRY and work through difficult situations? It's important for him to learn this concept to get through life :/ I just don't know how.

Thanks!!!

I have a 13 yo as well, and he lacks motivation too. So I feel your pain. I can't seem to find anything (other than video games) that really interests him. And if he thinks something is going to take effort... forget it. I don't know the answer but if you figure it out let me know.

I found showing what the 'possibility' can be helps a lot.

so like the guitar - what music does he like and introduce conversations about how his favorite band all became/made it to where they are. View interviews together.
Make dinner or driving conversation about stuff your found and ask for input from him and prompt for answers from him on his thoughts and options.

with homework, maybe take him to university colleges and clubs in the field that he likes.
If he hasn't picked anything, as a parent Im sure you have seen his strength in areas, like reading, as an example, and then introduce in his world all the things that can use reading to move into a direction, like being a writer for books/comic books/screenplays, or being a librarian and what the salaries are. etc...

just some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.
