Single parents group to host family fest The Single Parents Support Network will host a Single Parent Family Fest event on Saturday at State Fair Park.

BY CARLA HINTON chinton@opubco.com _ Published: March 22, 2012

An organization committed to helping single parents will sponsor a Single Parent Family Fest on Saturday at State Fair Park, NW 10 and May Avenue.

Rhonda Thomas, founder and director of the Single Parent Support Network, said Saturday's event will include information sessions on such topics as parenting, extreme couponing, finding a job, parenting, special needs children and “Seven Habits of Soul Healthy Singles.”
Children will be treated to inflatables, the Safe Kids Oklahoma Safety Village, Spaghetti Eddie, a Character Corner, Oklahoma City Thunder NBA mascot Rumble and other entertainment.

“The bottom line on the family fest is to bring awareness to single-parent family issues and to bring resources to one place that single parents can access,” Thomas said.

Thomas, who is single mom to son Nathan, said she started the support network several years ago because she saw a need for an educational support system geared specifically for single parents. Thomas said single parents include divorced parents, widows and widowers and never-married single parents. The network also reaches out to foster and adoptive single parents, single grandparents, a parent whose spouse is incarcerated or gone for an extended period of time.

The network provides monthly gatherings for single parents, including guest speakers on topics such as money management and healthy cooking. The March 17 network gathering at Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene, 4400 Northwest Expressway, brought together single parents who rotated through several educational sessions.

Tasha Jackson, 28, of Ada, said she was chosen as the organization's “Queen for a Day” at a pampering session hosted by the network last year. Jackson, an elementary schoolteacher's assistant, said she and several other single parents from Ada have been attending the network's monthly classes for the past three months.

“I have learned so much by coming to these meetings,” she said.
The children of single parents attending the March 17 gathering were treated to a field trip to the Myriad Gardens by the children's ministry group at Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene.

Lisa Sanders, the church's children's pastor, said the church seized the opportunity to develop a program for the group of children that attend the support network events with their parents. She said the church plans to continue the outreach to single-parent families by offering exposing attendees' children to the arts, academics, athletics and other adventures.
Thomas said in addition to the family fest event, other plans for this year include the implementation of a family mentor program pairing single parent families with two-parent families. Also, Thomas said a special program for the growing number of single fathers also is being created.

“I have a passion for impacting the next generation,” she said.

Hi,

Such kinds of events demand special planning.Lack of planning might be dangerous. Many event management companies works hard for planning out such kinds of events.
